LYS Stories – Wool Baa in Port Melbourne

After a prolonged period of being a complete shut-in (Life has been a bit hard recently), I finally left the apartment and went on an adventure! One of the things I’ve wanted to do with this blog is to document all of the local yarn stores in Melbourne’s metro area, so when some fellow yarnie friends invited me out to Met Art World in Port Melbourne, I immediately knew we’d have to check out Wool Baa on Bay St while we were there!

Wool Baa is a charming little store that’s a short walk from stop 127 on the Route 109 tram line, so it’s pretty easy to get to from Melbourne’s CBD. Port Melbourne itself is quite a lovely area, wth lots of old terrace houses lining the streets and lots of nice cafes to stop at, too- a really nice day out!

(Also, Met Art Gallery was excellent, The Starry Sky Exhibit has gone viral recently, and with good reason- it’s very pretty, and I definitely reccommend it!)

But anyway, on to the reason why you clicked on this post- the yarn! Woo Baa stock a nice variety of yarns but their most prominent yarn is easily their very own Adorn brand, which has four different varieties:

  • Cotton Cashmere DK, which comes in 28 colours. Composition is 85% Cotton/15% Cashmere
  • Silky Merino DK, which comes in 33 colours. Composition is 90% Superfine Merino/10% Silk
  • Silky Merino 4ply, which comes in 33 colours. Composition is 90% Superfine Merino/10% Silk
  • Silky Cashmerino 4ply, which comes in 17 colours. Composition is 70% Superfine Merino/20% Silk/10% Cashmere

All four yarns were delightful to touch and were oh-so-squishy. Had I not been so focused on wanting a new pair of 9-inch circulars for the socks I had just cast on, I might have picked up a couple of balls of the Silky Merino DK to make a little something with! Ah well, just gives me an excuse to head back some time, right?

Aside from their signature brand, they also carry yarns from Tex Yarns, Aus Yarn Co and Prestige Yarns to round out their lineup. I picked up some Sock Blockers too, as I’ve been umming and aahing over getting a pair ever since I made my first pair of socks a couple of months back.

Another thing I really liked about Wool Baa was that the patterns were very easily found in the center of the store- in fact, the store’s owner is a pattern designer herself, and sells a huge amount of Wool Baa-exclusive patterns. I really like how warm and comfy the Patch Drop Sleeve Sweater looks, especially with how chilly it is as I write this (though in typical Melbourne fashion, the moment I finished typing that sentence, the sun came out!).

The store has a really small, cozy vibe that was honestly immaculate- probably due to he presence of a fireplace. Wool Baa also has a focus on inclusive slow fashion and offers private classes for both knitting and crochet, so if you aren’t into the group class thing and don’t have someone in your life to teach you, this is a great option!

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Wool Baa and absolutely recommend it if you’re in the area!

Until Next Time!
